Helen Cordero - Clay Story Tellers

We studied Native American artist Helen Cordero. She makes clay story teller figures. There is a large person or animal who has children or young animals climbing on their laps and backs and sitting on their heads to listen to the story told by the elder. Click here to learn more.

Perspective - 3D Boxes

We learned to draw three dimensional boxes using one-point linear perspective. Parallel lines appear to converge and disappear at the vanishing point. The 4th graders also created a color wheel out of the boxes.

Wayne Thiebaud

Georgia O'Keeffe

We're studying the art of Geogia O'Keeffe. She loved nature, and when she moved to New Mexico she spent a lot of time painting in the desert. One of her favorite things to paint was the skulls and animal bones she found. Students are learning about skulls in science class and we thought some skull paintings would be an excellent connection between art and science. We are viewing them are part of nature and are not meant to be scary.

Warhol portraits

We studied Andy Warhol. He created portraits of famous people and repeated them, often using different color in each image. We draw a portrait of a person or animal and repeated it six times on our paper. Then we carefully painted our images with watercolor paints, making each portrait's colors unique, and outlined them with sharpie. This was a very labor-intensive project and it took us several weeks. One of our big goals was to keep our colors light and see-through.
